Not sure how much this might improve performance of this laptop when running Linux. Maybe only for running Windows and gaming, maybe 64 bit Linux OS?

Upgrading the processor is generally the last step in upgrading - more often than not you don't notice a difference
And upgrading the cpu in a laptop is a bit risky....
Upgrades are preferably done in this order
More memory
Faster hard disk
On a desktop better graphics card - especially one that can run "Cuda" or the ATI version of it
Something else
CPU
