Portrait Mode Monitor solved

Post by nsivin »

I had a problem with Ubuntu that made me abandon it. I hope that it can be solved in Mint. I use a Lenovo monitor in i.e., portrait mode on a PC with a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Turbocache video card. Under Ubuntu 8.4, I was able to get instructions for using an NVIDIA Linux driver and enabling portrait mode. Under 8.10 and 9.4, however, these instructions no longer work, and no one at the Ubuntu or NVIDIA forums knows how to configure the video mode. That made the OS useless to me. I would very much like to install Mint, but I have to make sure I can use the pivoting monitor under it. Does anyone know how? I need clear instructions.

In this respect Mint is not different from Ubuntu, we use the same X-server
As far as I can find (but I don't have pivoted monitor so I can't try) it should be possible to rotate on Jaunty
The essential part of xorg.conf without rotation probably looks like this
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontZap" "False"
EndSection
With the modifications below it should work
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
# don't know if these two are necessary
Option "RandRRotation" "on"
Option "Rotate" "CCW"

EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
Option "RandRRotation"
# Not sure if these two are necessary
Option "DRI" "false" #3D Effects need to be disabled so screen rotation work
Option "Rotate" "CCW"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontZap" "False"
EndSection

Husse recommendation worked for me also. Sort of :?
I have a dual monitor set-up. Husse's suggestion rotated the entire screen which applied to both monitors. I'd like to have one oriented portrait and one landscape. I haven't been fittering around with this off and on for several months and haven't been able to work it out.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or tips on solving this.

Thanks.

If it helps here's my current xorg.conf

How do you use portrait mode on a camera to blur the background? How do you use portrait mode to blur the background on a Canon Powershot S3 IS camera? Potential scenario: A person stands in front of some trees/foliage and and my picture shows a crisp foreground of the subject and an artistically blurry background.
