Suggestions for printer and webcam

Postby Till on Mon Jun 22, 2009 7:42 pm

I have Mint 7 installed on my PC for 3 days now, and I have problems with my printer and my webcam. I was going to get new ones anyway, so I was thinking about
a. Epson Stylus Office B40W printer.
b. Logitech QuickCam E3500 Plus webcam.

Anyone have any experience with these models? Basically I want to plug them and do my job (I am a total newbie as far as Linux is concerned). Do you have any other models to suggest that will work right out of the box?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

webcam: see comments in post #4

viewtopic.php?f=49&t=28009

executive summary; find a webcam that is UVC compliant;

http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/#devices

printer: HP often works "out of the box"; do you want B&W laser or colour inkjet?

see here for Epson B40W; unknown if it works on linux

http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Epson

I would advise you not to buy it if you are new to linux:

newer canon inkjet printers work with Canon drivers;

this company makes drivers for many printers: http://www.turboprint.info/printers.html I recommend you look at their list of supported products: and buy turboprint: we have owned it for four years now and it has driven our various Canon inkjet printers well;

Brother printers have linux drivers; they need a little bit of care but install well;

and best install a 32bit version of Mint if installing these various printers:

actually I see Epson make printer drivers for what you proposed

http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/ink/DL1.do

so that printer should be fine to go on Mint

HP Deskjet D1470 works straight out of the box. It works, but beware, its made of the cheapest, tackiest materials known to man.

Well I'll be damned, it works! I guess it really worth it to pay 30 euros to get my printer working. Its a lot less than paying 100+ for a new printer that would "possibly" work, plus with Turboprint* I wont have to worry about getting a new Canon (or other brand) printer to work...

*Hell, I played with it a bit, this thing is amazing. I even payed the extra 6 euros to get the 2 years support...
