I would advise you not to buy it if you are new to linux:
newer canon inkjet printers work with Canon drivers;
this company makes drivers for many printers: http://www.turboprint.info/printers.html I recommend you look at their list of supported products: and buy turboprint: we have owned it for four years now and it has driven our various Canon inkjet printers well;
Brother printers have linux drivers; they need a little bit of care but install well;

actually I see Epson make printer drivers for what you proposed
