There are other CD/dvd writers in Linux
--but if that is not the issue, fix the links or spell out the actual problem with the CD, include make and model #., and the cd/dvd writer application you are using when you get the problem..

So it comes to this..
  • Media problems
    --the most likely
  • Firmware needs updates
  • The OS does not see the device
    --mount command needed, maybe..
  • The cd/dvd application can't read/use device
--other cd/dvd applications are available to try..
Nope, I see the url code blocks, but the actual link being shown does not work..

To make links I just go to the website and in Firefox, triple-click (highlight ), copy the location address and then paste it into the forum I am editing..(shift insert) works..

ok first of all binkie7,my pc is emachines 3230

right i have managed to access the download
i have followed the instructions and determined it is my 'master' drive, however it comes up with the error box 'target NEC ND-2510A is not found correctly' in a pop up box,as shown in one of the instruction display boxes, but it says verify the correct drive, but the dropdown box in the original bigger box,is greyed out so i cant access it,also in the box where it should say'target drive is not found' it says instead'SPTI ready'
Unless the device is kaput, it is usually a media problem, better quality media helps, like some name brands..

You have the new drive jumpered wrong. The NEC usually comes with the jumper in slave position, so you probably have both drives on the cable jumpered as slave instead of master and slave.
Set the NEC as master and the other drive as slave. (assuming they are both on the same cable.)

CS (cable Select) usually works as well, provided the cabling has the devices located at the correct places, master is at the end of the chain (ribbon cable); I usually place the CD on the 2nd ide channel by itself or with the 2nd hard drive

And as for windows, you may need updated firmware for that device, the manufacturers (not windows S fixes..)

It's academic, those links bring you to a site that has a registry hack. Since linux has no registry there's nothing to hack.
I have a problem with my CD drive where it doesn't read disks anymore
It's possible that it just broke especially if you've had it a long time.
