Hi,
We'll need to know your playback hardware.
Can you open a terminal, type aplay -l (small case L), hit enter, and copy/paste the output back here?

Just what I suspected . . . TWO devices ( thus the conflict ). . you can go into the BIOS to disable the onboard sound. (Intel or AC97). You may have to search around a bit to find it. Save the settings & reboot. Now your SB Live will be the primary!
You may have to check/change the sound settings in Mint after the reboot, but this should fix your problem . . .

Let us know how it turns out.

Their base model motherboards all had the onboard sound . . the Dell SB Live Add-on card was an upgrade from the factory. (instead of using a different motherboard)

Thanks! PS: this is my very first install of linux and I LOVE IT! After a few runs with live CDs I finally took the plunge and may make Mint7 my primary OS.

Hi ... I already could fix the sound problem on my dell studio 15 with Helena Linux Mint ....
The solution was to add this at the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=dell-m6
This fixed the problem, but I think each one has to find out his own correct model code...

I found this on here: http://www.linlap.com/wiki/dell+studio+15
