Have a AMD based laptop (Turion64) with an ATI X1200 chipset. I gave up on Jaunty, but Mint seems to be working well, atleast until it totally halted on me. Was doing a big compile gcc, fan was going pretty hard, then a hard stop (as if I'd held the power key for 5s).
As a side not, I mentioned my video card because my display flickers. I had tried downloading/installing the proprietary ATI drivers, but I haven't been able to get the new drivers working yet.
Of course you already know of the well documented ATI/Intel bugs that are in the kernel of Jaunty,Gloria, and all other distros that use this kernel.
In a nutshell ? , go back to your favorite flavor of Mint 6, and patiently wait for Helena/Karmic. or try the use at your own risk solution here: (please read the whole post) viewtopic.php?f=58&t=27963#p168308
