Headphone Jack Not Working

Postby Enelight612 on Sun Jul 19, 2009 9:44 pm

Hi all!

This is quirky and I've googled/ forum searched a lot with no definitive answer. Here's the problem: My laptop speakers work fine. But the instant I plug something into the headphone jack, sound is shut off (none from laptop speakers and none from the headphones). I've tooled around with alsamixer and nothing is muted. However, even at max volume, there isn't any sound coming out of the headphones or speakers that I plug into it.

I have a Gateway M-152 XL.

I'm somewhat of a new linux user; I've only started this summer about a month and a half ago, so if there's anything that I need to do in-depth that I normally wouldn't touch, please go into a bit more detail.

A couple of questions that may help approach an answer:

1. Is it a specific program you're running that doesn't have sound? Have you tried others aside from that one to see if it's a) that specific program or b) a specific type of program causing the problem (movies, for instance).

2. Is this a new development? Had the headphones previously worked on Linux?

3. Do they work under Windows? Or could it possibly be a jack-related problem?

4. If it works under Windows but doesn't work at all under Mint, have you tried running a liveCD of some other distribution, or even a new liveCD of Mint, to see if it happens consistently in Linux, or simply under your current install?

Hopefully somewhere in there, a flag will arise.

In Terminal, mint menu>Terminal
    inxi -A
Audio: Card Creative Labs SB Audigy driver EMU10K1_Audigy
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.18rc
    inxi -F
--gives a short list of your hardware specs..
--will identify the sound card data, it is likely an Intel HD chi, and there are some issues with that device on Ubuntu 9.04, which is an equivalence to Mint 7 -gloria (being that they are using most of the same repositories (software sites on the Internet))

Also via the desktop, checks..

Nebcanuck:
1) It's all programs, not just one. Any program that produces sound will cut off when headphones/speakers are plugged in.
2) It's worked on previous versions of linux but not on LinuxMint-Gloria
3) They worked under windows fine, before I wiped it to install Linux
4) From what I've tested, it just happens under the current install.

Go to the sound control panel
In the "switches" tab, is "headphone LFE" checked?
Dell Optiplex GX280, Pentium 4 64-bit 3.2GHz, 3.5GB RAM, 2x160GB HDD

In a world without walls or fences, theres no need for windows or gates

have you tried slowly inserting the headphone jack with them in your ears?? I has the same problem until I realized that I have to have them plugged into the jack just right. If I plug them in all the way they stop working.

How Do I Stop Headphone Icon Coming Up On My Phone? I have an old Sony Ericsson K550i. Recently my phone has starting flashing, it was a little headphone icon in the left hand corner of my screen. I've tried turning off my phone, charging, changing theme, profile, everything, you name it. Can you please help me?
