A couple of questions that may help approach an answer:
1. Is it a specific program you're running that doesn't have sound? Have you tried others aside from that one to see if it's a) that specific program or b) a specific type of program causing the problem (movies, for instance).
2. Is this a new development? Had the headphones previously worked on Linux?
3. Do they work under Windows? Or could it possibly be a jack-related problem?
4. If it works under Windows but doesn't work at all under Mint, have you tried running a liveCD of some other distribution, or even a new liveCD of Mint, to see if it happens consistently in Linux, or simply under your current install?
Hopefully somewhere in there, a flag will arise.

Re: Headphone Jack Not Working
Go to the sound control panel
In the "switches" tab, is "headphone LFE" checked?

Re: Headphone Jack Not Working
have you tried slowly inserting the headphone jack with them in your ears?? I has the same problem until I realized that I have to have them plugged into the jack just right. If I plug them in all the way they stop working.
