installing ATI driver

after a successful install of the nvidia driver on my desktop pc, I now want to install the ATI driver on my laptop.

Have bianca kde edition on laptop, have been working on it by myself, but cant get the glxgears to work properly.... every try ends up with a messed up xorg.conf (good i have a back up )

envy doesnt work, this is the error in envy :

m: cannot remove `*.deb': No such file or directory
Ubuntu Edgy 32bit

Your graphic card does not seem to be supported by the driver.

Would you like to go ahead with the installation even if, according to Envy, your card is not supported?

I choose no.

i have an ATI Radeon IGP 320M chipset.

I do not know what kinks KDE might ne tossing you, tried 3 different distro for about 3 hours before throwing them out, always ran slower than equivikant gnome distros, and but mostly menus did not agree with me

here is the latest envy link .94 (I just tried it on my nvudia card and it ran flawlessly and the newer nvidia drivers uped my gears an extra 50fps

I'm going to switg over to the dell science project with ati 9550 and see how it goes,

well about kde... dont know what it is, but i like it better than gnome... gnome is okay , but i prefer KDE for my every day work. So i have gnome on my desktop, kde on my laptop

see if i can solve the problem with the envy link.

Worked flawlessly for my radeon 9550

What took do long was, getting Beryl 3 working:)
with AIGLX and composite
but using driver "radeon" instead of "ati" or 'fglrx'

the new fglrx is faster. but no eyeCandy

if you do a
lspci
see what internally your cards vendor string is
mine shows as a
ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AS [Radeon 9550]

i already changed the ati driver in radeon driver in xorg.conf, but no results there... i shall try to do a yes with envy.

i get a completely different envy error:

what's nvidia got the do with that?? ,changed the driver back from radeon to ATI... choosed option 2 with envy (remove nvidia, than option 3, install ATI) ... but still no luck...

ok, no need to panic, did a reinstall of envy, and I receive the original error.

i'm now performing a YES.

let you know when envy is finished.

just ignore all them messages
run it manually select the lastest ati driver
and worry about nvidia later, if you need xlg, nvidia stuff may be needed

no luck here... had to reboot and was unable to start X.

had to change xorg.conf with my old back up xorg.conf.....

it works, i can use my scroll wheel to go smoothly to another desktop, i can toss my running programs from one place to another... but the kicker !

i cant click on kmenu, its extremely slow, wont open. cant start any applet from kicker... but hey, i'm happy that my 3d rendering is working

after all the crap I went through found a most interesting bit that involves Live-CD
and what type of optical drive used to boot/install it

I now can use beryl in 2 modes "ati" driver AIGLX +Composite +DRI
or "radeon" -AIGLX -Composite go figure
