Sound Not Working (Realtek HD ALC663)

Postby jstengren on Fri Jul 24, 2009 6:48 pm

Extreme newb here...

So, after coming-up on Mint (very pretty, by the way), it seemed like my sound drivers had properly installed. However, doing a sound test from the control panel plays absolutely zilch. I've tried switching different devices in the control panel to no avail, and also tried playing music from Amazon.com. Irritating... ideas?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

First make absolutely certain you do not have some bad mixer settings: play a music CD or mp3 file, open "alsamixer" in a terminal and increse sliders and unmute channels (with the "m" key) until you get sound. If that does not work go to Sound and Video and make sure the Pulse settings are for your sound card. If that still does not work post the output of the following commands to this thread:

aplay -l
inxi -A

No sound either. Here is my output:

hugo@elliott-laptop ~ $ inxi -A
Audio: Card ATI IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller driver ATI IXP AC97 controller

My sound problem is SOLVED by following this:

Postby Husse on Fri Nov 14, 2008 2:53 am
There is a problem here

00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
00:14.6 Modem: ATI Technologies Inc SB400 AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02)

The modem and the sound conflicts, but you can't turn the modem off if it's possible
Check if a modem driver is loaded

Code: Select all
lsmod | grep modem

I suspect you find snd-atiixp-modem
If so

Code: Select all
gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-modem

Remove the # in front of blacklist snd-atiixp-modem
It's obviously a well known problem and I've seen reports that this will help (although the advice was not quite correct)

Reboot and sound works

I was having the exact same problem on my Compaq v2000 laptop. I had the same hardware output as prolinux, and tried the blacklist-modem.conf option. It did indeed block the modem, as it does not appear in the lists anymore, but I still do not have sound. I have double checked sound mixer settings, and still nothing. I have tried switching the device used, but to no avail. I know that this device also gives me problems in Windows 7. Damned Conexant audio drivers.

thirdeye@thirdeye-mint ~ $ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: IXP [ATI IXP], device 0: ATI IXP AC97 [ATI IXP AC97]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

thirdeye@thirdeye-mint ~ $ inxi -A
Audio: Card ATI IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller driver ATI IXP AC97 controller
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.18rc3

thirdeye@thirdeye-mint ~ $ lsmod | grep modem
thirdeye@thirdeye-mint ~ $

I am really enjoying Mint so far, and this would be the last piece of the puzzle.

Thanks
