widescreen laptop on a docking bay

I've installed Mint on my Dell laptop, but I installed while attached to a docking bay.

The laptop has a widescreen monitor, but the screen I'm using with the bay is not, so Mint detected that screen size during install.

Now when I run the laptop off the bay it runs in non widescreen mode leaving black bars down the sides.

As I do most of my work on the docking bay its not the end of the world but it would be nice to get it working. Is there a way to configure it so it can detect which screen res it should use?

there is no one answer for this without knowing what's under the dells hood.
would require you to specfiy what video card/chipset your dell has

if you start a terminal session and type in
lspci

post that along with what video driver is being used in file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

and have you run envy or not?
