New installation, avi playback issues (onboard Intel video)

Post by skydiverQ »

Hi all, relative newbie here.

CPU is an older IBM/Lenovo ThinkCentre, P4 2.0, 1Gb RAM
monitor is an Acer flat panel @ 1366X768
Onboard video, Lenovo states the memory is:

Graphics Controller
* Type AGP - Integrated
* Graphics Processor / Vendor Intel Extreme Graphics 2
* Video Memory Shared video memory (UMA)

I've downloaded an .avi file, and I am having the following troubles:

1) Trying to play it in VLC, the VLC flickers on for a split second, then crashes;
2) GNOME MPlayer plays only a blue screen;
3) MPlayer plays the file but I cannot resize it any larger than the default resolution. If I try fullscreen or 2:1 sizing, the window grows but the actual video stays the same size.

My own common sense tells me that it's a shared video memory issue, but I haven't a clue how to fix it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

sky

You have given us some info but you have to tell us more facts.
The minimum is exactly which Mint you have - which version and which edition (main or any of the CEs)
We also need to know a bit about all your hardware.
Run " lspci " in a terminal and post here
Some wifi and possibly built in sound can be connected to USB even if they are internal - if you suspect you have one of these run " lsusb " in a terminal.
This topic contains links to all (?) the really good solutions for sound in Mint
Also tell us if this is using mint4win or not, quite important
This is a standard answer so it may not be fully applicable to your situation

"CPU is an older IBM/Lenovo ThinkCentre, P4 2.0, 1Gb RAM"

This may mean that PulseAudio should be removed
