Is there a Mint Hardware Database?

Post by MerelyJim »

Hi. New user. Just installed Mint 7 on my Acer Extensa 5260 laptop, and everything worked without requiring additional downloads, trouble-shooting, sacrificing of goats, all the stuff that usually goes on with running Linux on a laptop. Is there a database I can post the hardware/results to? Always good to have someone doing the research and well as being the guinea pig...

MerelyJim,

Normally, you could add an entry to the Mint Wiki Hardware Compatibility Section

http://linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php/Hardware

but there has been trouble recently with malicious edits of the Wiki so it has been locked until further notice.

You may like to add a post to this thread instead:

It's only a tiny bit off-topic:

Google hits on two sites of note, both the same, really:

www.ubuntuhcl.org/
www.linuxminthcl.org/

The site is of, at best, dubious ethical standard, unless there's something I don't know. The reason being it's clearly a revenue generator, and it's using the Mint and Ubuntu brands to do it. Is this kosher? Does anyone know what the deal is? Is revenue shared by the site with Mint/Ubuntu (I'm just curious - I don't want to start any kind of flame wars or any other nonsense)? Is it worthwhile contributing to? What's the deal?

  • Welcome to our site!
Our mission is to provide a forum for users of Linux Mint to share their experiences with different hardware , to ease the transition of new users to Linux Mint, as well as help users pick the right hardware for their Linux Mint system.
I don't know that you can even call it a revenue generator and even if it was, so what!
--since both Ubuntu and Mint are free to download and use, or you can buy the CD/DVD versions..

There are lots of general sites or forums also available, it's up to the shopper to decide..

If you want to spread the good word more widely..

A bigger audience is available to you or anyone else, who is confirming their experience for a specific notebook and Linux Mint's installation and trouble free operation, then probably (until the Linux Wiki) becomes available again, you might consider some of the more general forums

Hi,

Cool! I figured maybe someone had figured out a way of making advertising revenue by exploiting Ubuntu and Mint branding and thought that it might be malicious. I read that wrong. I realize that there's nothing wrong with making a site like this anyway, my real worry was that if it really was a site purely for making money (mea culpa  ) then the owners of said site might do all sorts of unscrupulous things like generate/make up reviews. Mea culpa, again, glad to know the site's bona fide and I'll try to head there myself at some point and add a couple of reviews. Sorry to hear it's not quite the financial success, if it's not, it's a helpful idea anyway. I'll spread the word.

One that I have found helpful . . . think I got it from DrHu . . :D . . not Mint specific, but . . .

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted a response. I'm late in doing so, but better late than never. :)
