You might try unplugging/switching off the the wireless, or powering off the notebook, and starting with Mint first, instead of XP

I checked the link you gave, it says that apt-get install backports jaunty for a user didn't work ; so it wasn't necessary a reliable suggestion

--a better description
  • So I installed Ubuntu on the laptop, wiping XP. I ran apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty, rebooted, and presto, it detected my wireless card. All was well, or so I thought. ... I noticed the wifi light on the front of the machine was not lit. The card must not be enabled.
In the terminal
  • inxi -N
    --check network card
    inxi -F
    --short list of all hardware
    inxi -h
    --help options for inxi command
    ifconfig
    --is the network UP
    iwlist scanning
    --any wireless networks sjowing
    iwconfig
    --status of wireless card (nic)

"I heard that I might need to "Blacklist" the old driver, but I have no idea how to do this."

I know how to blacklist ALSA drivers.
It should be about the same for other drivers.

In Ubuntu 9.04 all blacklists seems to be here:
/etc/modprobe.d

this is an example of blacklisting drivers:

Could you please write a more detailed howto?

It seems that many users have the same problem.
Make it step-by-step, if you can.

I just posted a howto on sound:

Would you be so kind to write something like that?

I intend getting a Toshiba NB205-N310 Netbook. Also I intend for initial periods to use Dual Boot of Win XP & Gloria.
I hope that this will work ok.
This post will be very useful in case I have problems.
I can't stress enough creating a restore DVD when you first fire this thing up in XP: your initial Mint 7 install will destroy your XP partition, and if anything goes wrong with your Mint 7 Install (Like mine did), you'll be wanting it. Also, leave that restore partition intact!
Should I make a Restore DVD ( for XP, I presume) ?
How to leave the restore partition intact?
Thanks

Very noobish guy here.
How do you do #2?
"2: ran "sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty""

I tried the following and now my wireless works just fine:

1: Wiped Linux Mint 7 and swap drive using the Live CD. Created new swap and logical partitions, and installed a fresh copy of Linux Mint 7.
2: ran "sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty"
3: Rebooted
4: Wireless functions perfectly!

PLEASE NOTE: I did not Update, Fiddle with drivers or configure or do ANYTHING: just installed Mint 7, ran the code and rebooted.

ALSO NOTE: You will still need to boot Windows XP when you first take it out of the box to enable the WiFi card: I did that long ago, but for those reading this chain, just want to make sure that's clear. You can THEN install mint and run the backports.

Thanks all for the support as I worked through this: I look forward to making Linux Mint 7 my OS of choice for Work and for Play!

Despite the good advice which I had stored, I goofed.......
I did not create the Restore DVD & have installed Gloria on Toshiba NB205-N310.
I get Grub, I can get Gloria but Win XP does not load.
Can you advise how to do so since I do not have recovery DVD
Will be grateful for help

I have a Compaq CQ61-313US and this fixed my wireless.
I have been looking for a solution on this for 2 months.
ran "sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty"
I pushed the wireless button up near the power button it didn't turn on by itself.
I know this is old but maybe someone else will need it.
