Type this command on Terminal:

lspci -v

Then copy and paste the output of that command here.

This is your soundcard:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

The simplest solution might be this:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=32725

Read the howto.
Ask questions.
Apply.

QUOTE: "nd now I get now sound at all and error messages come up saying error whilst opening sound device "

Do you have sound or not?

aplay -l

EDIT: the command

aplay -l

will tell you which audio devices are available.
copy and paste it here.

Do not forget to reboot to enable ESound.

If you have an error message when you run an audio app,
please, provide the name of the app and that error message.

In Gnome Volume Control (icon "Speakers" on the panel) check the volume.

Enable the hidden switches in Gnome Volume Control.
Right Click on the icon "Speakers" -> Preferences -> enable all switches.

HDA cards have many controls and switches, you should turn the right ones.

EDIT: Did you make a new install according the howto?

By the way, I was busy myself with a Dell notebook with the same soundcard.

It has two Ubuntu 8.04 installed in dual boot.
The installation of OSS4 into one Ubuntu produced sound in another Ubuntu (ALSA).
It may have something to do with BIOS, perhaps.

OSS4 was playing sound perfecty.
But mic did not work.

The owner of the notebook told: "It is already fixed. No need in further experiments".

Perhaps, you should really install another Mint 7 in dual boot (10G is enough)
and try OSS4 there.

Howto is here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound

In both cases, you should turn the right switches.
For ALSA, try to enable all hidden switches in Gnome Volume Control (preferences).

also: System -> preferences -> sound

EDIT:
ALSA: Have you tried to play audio with VLC?
see also preferences in VLC

ALSA Troubleshooting

EDIT:
It seems that you are not alone with your problem
http://www.google.com/search?q=ubuntu%2 ... 8&oe=UTF-8

It makes sense, perhaps, to try to make OSS4 working

Try to compile OSS4 from Mercurial
it is not difficult.
Howto is the same:

THIS IS EXACTLY YOUR SOUND CARD!!!

here is a kind of solution:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/366626

I added in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=fujitsu
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
...
PROFIT!

Though it must work automatically, you can put Your model or other options there - in model=.
I have Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) at my fujitsu siemens amilo xi1546.

HOW TO FIND YOUR MODEL is here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

PCLinuxOS, often abbreviated as PCLOS or P'CLOS, is a desktop operating system. It is a free operating system for personal computers aimed at ease of use.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCLinuxOS

I would try it just now, but it seems to have RPMs.
Does it have PulseAudio inside?

It looks like mancuk29 is happy with that distro, and he should try it out, perhaps.

The Ubuntu/Mint project is already dead. It is obvious.
If you do not believe, visit Ubuntu forum and observe it a little.

I am searching myself for another distro,
but I have not yet found anything which could satisfy my needs.
It is very depressive indeed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCLinuxOS
QUOTE:
PCLinuxOS is distributed as a Live CD, which can also be installed to a local hard disk drive or USB flash drive. Version 2009.1 provides a USB installer to create a Live USB, where the user's configuration and personal data can be saved if desired. A live USB of older versions of PCLinuxOS can be created manually or with UNetbootin [5].The entire CD can be copied to and run from memory (if the system has sufficient RAM) increasing speed. PCLinuxOS uses APT-RPM, based on Advanced Packaging Tool (or APT), a package management system (originally from the Debian distribution), together with Synaptic Package Manager, a GUI front-end to APT, in order to add, remove or update packages. If there is enough memory on the machine and a network connection, the Live CD can update packages. PCLinuxOS is also designed to be easy to remaster after installation, creating one's own personalized CD, using the mklivecd tool.
End of QUOTE

I will try it now too!!!

EDIT: By description, it should be something absolutely cool. Rolling release!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_release
In software development, a rolling release approach refers to a continuously developing software system, as opposed to one with versions that must be reinstalled over the previous versions. It is one of many types of software release life cycles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCLinuxOS
QUOTE:
PCLinuxOS maintains its own software repository, available via the Advanced Packaging Tool (APT) and its Synaptic front-end, completely replacing Mandriva's urpmi. This means that an installation could be continuously updated to the latest versions of packages, hence foregoing the need to re-install the entire distribution upon each successive release. In the releases before 2007, it was sometimes necessary to perform a re-installation.

I just booted PCLinuxOS LiveCD.

Started Synaptic.

It has Audacity package, but Maxima is absent.
Not very promising...

Re: HELP PLEASE - Compaq Mini 700 no sound

"whats Maxima ????"

You may not need it at all :D

Maxima is a complete computer algebra system based on a 1982 version of Macsyma. It is written in Common Lisp and runs on all POSIX platforms such as Mac OS X, Unix, BSD, and Linux as well as under Microsoft Windows. It is free software released under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

a nice toy for playing with math

Your soundcard:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

"Optimize Me" has exactly the same card on his computer, and it works well for him.

As far as I know, he removed PulseAudio and upgraded ALSA, and this produced a certain improvement.
