Trying to use old external hard drive

Post by ruthy »

Hello fellow minters

I have an external hard drive. I took it out from my old desk top which ran on XP. It worked fine when I hooked it up to the laptop when it was running vista, but now i'm running Linux when I plug it up after starting up for a moment the external hard drive seems to shuts its self down. I don't even have time to try and access any of the folders.

Have a sunny afternoon

Hi,
I don't have any answers but it seems to me that it's not clear what you are doing. For example, what you call an external hard drive is really an internal hard dive in an enclosure? Also confusion about desktop versus laptop and what is running what and works with what. I'm just thinking that it's too unclear what you want need and the details but I could be wrong. Sorry if I am.

You need to include quite a lot more info. What do you mean, "seems to shut down"? Can you feel the drvie running, a little vibration? How did you hook up the drive to the PC? I have connected a drive to a PC USB port with an adapter.

OK
I can hear the drive running then it will go quiet and stop vibrating as soon as its detected by my laptop. And its connected to the laptop vier a usb cable.

Did you look in the File Manager of the PC for the drive? I have done this with a Mint 7 desktop, moved a bunch of files, then plugged the drive into the USB port on a EEE Asus mini laptop. The “external” drive showed up both times. I have done the same with a old CD drive to use with the Asus PC. The drive shows up like a USB flash drive in the File Manager.
When you plug in the drive, click on the My Computer Icon on the desktop and see if the drive is there.

Hi Lex

I did what you suggested and its there now. I think it actually seems like the USB cable is lose on the hard drive case end and sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. It didn't used to do this :? and I haven't used it for a while.

Thank you
