Re: Knakered (or not so Knackered HDD) on Sony VAIO Laptop

The noises don't bode well for much of anything and at some point the HDD will fail, even if it is getting by at the moment. The internals of a modern HDD are remarkably fine and intricate, so even a slight misalignment of the heads will ultimately cause it to fail, at which point the failure might be quite spectacular. An HDD on an old desktop of mine began whirring and clacking, lasted maybe even a couple of months before its inevitable total and complete failure; fortunately the noises were understood as a warning and although on a students wage purchasing a new HDD was an expense I put off for as long as possible, I had begun saving money towards it and making daily backups of important data to CD when the noises began, making the eventual replacement a mere chore rather than a crisis.

If the machine's still under warranty then Sony should be forced to replace or repair it, and do it properly this time or use a better courier; surely it would be within an owner's rights to also complain about the machine being returned still faulty, as the diagnostic message seems to indicate it was.

[edit:] Actually, DrHu below is right, if this is user damage then the repairs aren't generally going to be covered by a manufacturer's warranty - that said, if they already agreed to fix it and they haven't done so, then sending it back to them might be the way to go. Don't tell them about this thread

Your Hitachi test result..

Dapper Dan post..
  • just as an update, Hitachi advise that the result code indicated from DFT
would certainly indicate that the drive is failing imminently. It was highly suggested that I backup anything of importance because it is no longer reliable
You are trying to get Sony to fix a user caused problem
--so, yes it is likely you (friend) has damaged the hard-drive
You might be able to claim it is a known problem drive ..

--I think it was Hitachi that took over IBM's drive business..

Now, Sony could indicate it is a user caused problem, or they could eat the cost and replace the hard drive
--if they don't, then it's up to you whether a replacement hard-drive is justified, or you might be able to limp along with it as it is

Or try a hard-drive test utility, eg spinrite

Those noises don't make it sound healthy
