What's the cause of hd "bad-sectors"..?

What is the cause of hd's developing bad sectors..?

What does Ubuntu Mint do when the OS encounters a bad sector..?

I've tried to determine why bad-sectors happen, with a hd that seemed to be "growing bad-sectors"...
Three for a month, then one more, then a week later another one... There seemed to be tiny microscopic smudges on the hd platter..?
I had acquired that hd from the dump... I guessed that maybe it was microscopic insects that got squished on the platter, because the bad sectors seemed to grow and expand outward and side to side... What do bad-sectors come from..?
Why did the chicken come to the city..?
To cross the road.. to show the squirrels it Can be done...
