SOLVED Toshiba/Compiz issues

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 (part No PSAAKC-VA104) with onboard ATI RADEONĀ® XPRESS 200M Graphics card which currently dual boots Vista and PCLOS2009.

Under PCLOS Compiz works fine and I can display and rotate the desktop cube with no problems. However, under Mint 8 (and previously Mint 7) although Compiz effects are activated (wobbly windows etc) the Cube functionality is severely flawed.

Pressing "<CTRL><ALT>Mouse Drag" simply highlights an area of the desktop, the cube does not rotate. Pressing "<CTRL><ALT>Down Arrow" displays the cube faces in filmstrip mode - but pressing <LEFT> or <RIGHT> Arrow has no effect.

It works fine on a Lenovo T40 and as I said Compiz under PCLOS works fine on the Tosh. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be. I'd love to install Mint and is is SO easy and intuative to use - but not if it means losing the cool Compiz desktop :D

I've tried searching various combinations of Toshiba and Compis but no one seems to have reported anything like this issue anywhere :(

I am pretty new to this but had a similar problem. Did you go to the the Compiz Settings Manger? Make sure desktop cube & rotate cube are enabled, & desktop wall is disabled. The filmstrip you are seeing sounds like the wall is enabled not the cube.

Well - I'm truly confused now.

I had installed Mint 8 on a 50Gb partition of an external USB drive - it was a slow install and I had to manually set the boot flag on the extended partition but it worked fine. So I connected it my Laptop and booted. Again - a very slow boot - but once up and running performance seemed fine.

So I went into the Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager and made all my selections there - and surprise surprise, it all worked fine !!!

So I then re-booted using the Live CD. The first time it only gt as far as

Code: Select all

loading /casper vmllinuz . . . . . . . . . . . .
loading /casper /initrd.lz . . . . . . . . . . .
Ready
The cursor jumped to the top left of the screen and everything stopped. So I restarted and selected compatability mode and recalled that I had seen that issue before. This time it booted but the display was a little distorted and I was unable to configure ANY Compiz settings at all.

So another reebot - and this time it ran throiugh perfectly ? Also - I was able to use the SImple manager to make Compix changes and all key combinations and shortcuts worked fine.

So it looks like the old PCLOS will be getting the boot (no pun intended) - at least for the time being
