Sound on first boot, none after

I am a pretty experienced Linux user (Jamd Linux (2002-2003), Gentoo (2003-2006) now Ubuntu and Mint).

Usually I can figure issues out with enough time and energy, but this one has killed me.

I've got both an Audigy 1 (Because of it's firewire port) PCI card, and on board Intel sound.

I currently have a speaker plugged into each to tell with turns out to be default. When I did the initial install it all worked like a champ. Rebooted after installing a Broadcom 43xx Wireless card driver, and now....... Silence from either or sound card.

I have also done the usual. Checked for Mute in alsamixer, changed devices via the sound control (double clicking the speaker) and moving my plugs around to see if one card is running or not.

I haven't finished updating all the software yet (122 to update) because I remember reading something about the Intel card having issues with the 6.20 kernel.

Such long lists are helpful but oh so hard to read
It seems OK, but to really be sure I have to read it carefully a few times....
Quite often the problem just goes away after a reboot or two...
Check in BIOS that you have the on board sound disabled. It's usually no good idea to have both enabled.
Update - no problems but do not update the kernel
Untick these updates
There is a method described in the forum to block kernel updates but I don't find it - it's getting increasingly hard as the forum grows
Maybe I should know - but you can't remember everything
Found it! Synaptic->Package->Lock Version and select the package you want to lock of course
(How you may wonder - I remembered that one member of the forum had tons of problems with kernel and ICH and searched in his posts )

I have no clue how it fixed, but I changed some resolutions for my dual monitors (gotta love nvidia-settings) had it working for a minute, rebooted and it craped out, and rebooted again into sound. It's all crazy, but it's working right now.

Jepp - this happens. I've seen numerous reports (well...) that just rebooting fixes problems. I guess that something has been corrupted in memory and reading it in again gets rid of that.
One caution

nvidia-settings

can be dangerous
If you manage to save to xorg.conf this can destroy it as it does not read your file and make changes in it rather makes a new xorg.conf.
Special settings for things like Beryl and input devices just disappear. It is supposed to make a backup, but I don't trust that.
I'll explore it a bit for an answer to someone else - if I find the post

I learned a lot about the xorg.conf issues when I was a Gentoo user. Manually editing it like mad to get 5 monitors going took weeks, and got me pretty square on X server issues (I still have some isses with a friends IBM notebook and it's Bios).

Right now I've got screwy WiFi issues I'm searching for in here.
