I have a few reports of similar behavior in Helena and I'll add this to the list
Frankly it's bugging me - I can't get to grips with it if you have set everything for screensavers and power saving not to do anything
There may be some setting in BIOS though, check that

Hello there,
I am a new Linux Mint user, and I've the same problem(haven't seen it in Ubuntu before). I am using Linux Mint 8 Helena, Main Edition. I have turned off all power saving/sleeping features, but the screen still goes to sleep instead of running the screensaver. This happens no matter which power options or screensaver I select. I am on an NVidia graphics card running the recommended restricted driver(NVidia version 185). This computer is a Dell XPS Gen 4. The Processor is: Pentium 4 Prescott DT, 3.4GHZ, 1 MEGB 800FSB, SKT-T.
Any other information that could be of help?
-Chrys

I think a solution or at least workaround is found in this topic (towards the end)
