Radeon RV100 QY (Screen resolution).

Hi Folkd:
I ran >>> lspci | grep -i vga
To find my Card make and type which is....
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]

I downloaded from Synaptic:
Nvidia-glx-96-dev

But still see from control panel:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

I tried:
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Which appeared to save the file but now I have to run Mint 8 in LOW GRAPHICS MODE.

Has anyone come up with a solution for this please?
Many thanks.

Thought it might help someone if I posted my xorg?
I'll be going back to Mint 7 for now, so there is no rush.
Many thanks.

What makes this thread provoke a double-take is that you appear to be trying to install the proprietary nVidia drivers for an ATi radeon graphics card.

The appropriate module for this card, I believe, is X.org's radeon driver, which should be installed by default on mint 8 from the get-go.

So, um, remove the nVidia drivers or not install them in the first place, seems to me a good start.

Hi Husse.
Yes but when I get the message that I do not appear to be using Nvidia drivers it gets really confusing. Probably I made a mistake from memory having found the same issue with Ubuntu which somehow and after hours of reading a fiddling went away?

In any case the issue is just as with Ubuntu before the major 9.10 upgrade, I seem to be in the same place once more. I do have the latest Radeon Drivers/Linux installed. This issue was there before I installed anything.

No worries. You guys do a great job and I'm very grateful for it too. Thank you.

I'm not Husse, the email you get for topic reply notifications just happens to come from an address of his :)

It might help to clear the air; the current version of X used in mint 8 does not require an xorg.conf at all with xorg modules (there appears to have been a move to zero config). If a modified xorg.conf is causing issues, an easy step is to simply remove it.

Further, it might help to completely remove the nVidia driver you have installed since it is not for your card. You can do this through synaptic since you obtained the drivers using it.

If you are able and willing, a clean reinstall might the safest route of all, as it will achieve the above two objectives as well as resetting any other configuration settings which might have been altered in the meantime.

On a similar, slightly later gen 9600 radeon there is no problem setting resolution at all; however, if after reverting to the default radeon module and absence of xorg.conf it remains impossible to set resolution, it might be worthwhile starting a new thread about that. Best of luck to you and thanks for being patient.

Mint Edition 8.

Hi Rich/Anyone else reading too.
I did what said and reinstalled it with these observations beforehand.

A. Live CD will also not allow a higher resolution than 800 x 600.
B. The Live CD will not run unless I choose compatibility mode.
C. I did remove the xorg file as you suggested and the system seemed to take on a larger res but it just stalled at desktop, going no further.

I ran lspci so you could see what I currently have as regards hardware. Perhaps this might help someone who could find the needle in this little haystack perhaps? Thanks for your patience, I'm in no rush I can cope with the large screen for a while and I'll be using my windows machine in the meantime (unfortunately)

Many thanks again.

I get the feeling this might be beyond me for the following reason: you appear to have an nVidia agp bridge with an ATi card on it, which explains why we were trying to install nVidia drivers earlier. I suspect that the problem may be caused by those two not playing nicely with one another, but I'm not well enough versed in agpgart and the radeon drivers to know for sure. It might be worth contacting xorg's support lists, here's a link to get started: linky.

Thanks Rich.
I noticed that too but didn't give it much thought. Mint 7 is a breeze and works from the box even if it is a bit slow with web scripts/flash. I've looked everywhere but like you am at at a loss at the moment.

I'll have a look at the link but I don't hold out much hope of me being able to fix this. Many thanks for trying anyway.

Best regards.

Hi folks no need to reply to this thread and waste anyone's time.
I've gone back to mint 7 in the meantime since I now need this comp for possible work.

Sorry about posting on the other users thread I thought that was directed at me, seems not.
Anyway there are problems with 8 so until I either get a different sound card or the issue is resolved I don't want to waste folks time. I did find my card listed in a bug listing for Ubuntu earlier but sadly lost the link through wiping the comp.

Thanks again.
