How to set screen res to 1680x1050 in Ubuntu Mint 8?

Post by wassm. »

Hi,
i will repeat my question here because my friend is using mint 8 (gnome):
Hi,
my friend is trying to connect his Samsung 206BW Monitor to Asus K50IJ Laptop, but there is no way that he get 1680x1050 res. The highest is 1366x768.

Any clue?

It is little bit hard to help him because we have contact only on skype. So, if anyone knows...

And, i saw some old Threads regarding xorg.conf, but there is no xorc.conf anymore in ubuntu 9.10. Is there some easy way to make this working...?

Asus K50ij: Pentium Dual-Core T4300 2x 2.10GHz • 3072MB (1x 1024MB und 1x 2048MB) • 320GB • DVD+/-RW DL • Intel GMA X4500M (IGP)

Thanks

  • Isn't that the native resolution of that notebook's 15.6" widescreen ?

--so maybe you can't get more than the maximum resolution provided by the maufacturer
Create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic and on..) and Unbuntu codebased distributions, such as Mint 8

If you've seen some things which suggest changing settings in an xorg.conf, try my tutorial For making one here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=44871

Go to Mint Menu > Control Center > Monitors. Uncheck the box in front of "same image in all monitors" select the laptop screen and turn it off. You should now be able set your external monitor to it's max resolution. The reason you could only get to1366x768 was because that is highest common resolution of the two monitors.

Could you post screenshot of that menu? I have no mint, but have to send to my friend it-resolution is ok, but he tell me he can´t set refresh rate...

So he set the Resolution up to 1680x1050?

To set the refresh rate correctly set the resolution to 1680x1050 first then try setting the refresh rate. The refresh rate setting is right below the resolution setting. According to TigerDirect http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=1410 the specs say you can go up to 75Hz. But that doesn't necessarily mean that you can set it at 75Hz at 1680x1050. My monitor for example is also 1680x1050 and is also capable of a 75Hz but The 1680x1050 setting is only capable of a refresh rate of 60Hz. To get a refresh rate of 75Hz I must drop the resolution to 1440x900. Tell your friend to read the spec sheet that came with the monitor to see what resolution and refresh combinations are available.
