[FIXED] doom.x86: error while loading shared libraries

Post by vectoravtech »

If your a Dev skip this paragraph. Since I have Mint 8 gnome with 4gbs of memory on an ext4 partition my imaging backup plan I needed to figure out, it's a great idea to use before you mess with anything, at least that's what I do and I save it on an ext4 partition on it's own harddrive. About: Clonezilla, based on DRBL, partclone, Partition Image, ntfsclone and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). http://www.clonezilla.org/

I got this error when trying to run doom3 (((./doom.x86: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory))) after I installed it right after I did my mint updates and restarted. I found a fix for this here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-282240.html
It seems the update removes the ia32 libraries. It sounds kind of funny but that's what happened. After I installed this I'm gaming in doom3. Another thing I did was browse as root the doom3 directory and right click the doom3 script to run it and go to compatability and select run as program.

I took a screenshot of me playing doom3 and there's a link on the bottom of this page.

The following files need to be copied from the win32 install CDs
to your base/ directory ( md5 sums provided below as reference )
by default, /usr/local/games/doom3/base (file/ open as root- to be able to paste these)

71b8d37b2444d3d86a36fd61783844fe base/pak000.pk4
4bc4f3ba04ec2b4f4837be40e840a3c1 base/pak001.pk4
fa84069e9642ad9aa4b49624150cc345 base/pak002.pk4
f22d8464997924e4913e467e7d62d5fe base/pak003.pk4
38561a3c73f93f2e6fd31abf1d4e9102 base/pak004.pk4

I used this tutorial: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/ (if you remove the /doom/ you get a list with all these games on it):
FAQ: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
FAQ: Quake 4
FAQ: DOOM III
FAQ: Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
FAQ: Return To Castle Wolfenstein
FAQ: Quake III Arena

This is what the guy posted for the fix on that link:

For some reason an upgrade from Dapper to Edgy on 64-bit systems removes the the 32-bit libraries that Doom 3 needs in order to run. You'll need to install or reinstall the ia32 libraries.
ia32-lib-sdl
ia32-libs
lib32asound2
Just install ia32-lib-sdl in your favorite package manager, and the other two libraries will also be installed. That should do the trick.

I took a screenshot after I set up Doom3 in Linux Mint 8 Gnome 64bit: http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3669/doom3u.jpg
Guys dont install gyachi like I have in this photo because gyachi will be a broken package because it's not in the repository and firefox will start freezing.
This is why I made a clonezilla backup before trying this software out.
