[SOLVED] Gobi 2000 - cannot get it working

Post by lubo »

Hi all,
I am a linux newbie, so I would appreciate any hint I can get on this.

I got a Lenovo S10-3 with Qualcomm Gobi 2000 broadband option. I installed Linux Mint 9 on a usb stick to test it. I love Mint, it's great!!! With a single catch: I cannot get Gobi 2000 working.

I made some searches, and ended up with this forum post https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/554099
It describes how to fix the issue. I performed steps described in #33, however the device does not get mapped to ttyUSB.

Here output from lsusb
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0489:e00d Foxconn / Hon Hai
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 5986:0190 Acer, Inc
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:0158 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Mass Storage Device
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05c6:9204 Qualcomm, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 3538:0059 Power Quotient International Co., Ltd
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I have the suspicion, it might have to do with following (copied from /var/log/dmesg)
...
[ 0.417032] Fixed MDIO Bus: probed
[ 0.417299] PPP generic driver version 2.4.2
[ 0.417435] tun: Universal TUN/TAP device driver, 1.6
[ 0.417442] tun: (C) 1999-2004 Max Krasnyansky <maxk@qualcomm.com>
[ 0.417709] ehci_hcd: USB 2.0 'Enhanced' Host Controller (EHCI) Driver
...

From what I believe, it looks like qcserial module does not get loaded, however something else (TUN/TAP device driver) gets loaded instead (and when I am wrong, just tell me, please).
How can I find out/define, which module should load, and take care of specific devices?
I am not even sure I am asking the right question. Can anyone help me?

Thanx in advance

Can anyone help me?
I think the answer will be NO:

you can find threads on the (bigger) Ubuntu forums; the gobi-loader saga goes on and on;

I understand the gobi loader is involved in a mobile broadband system to connect to the internet: it seems to feature on some HP laptops too ........

correct me if I am wrong ...........

.......... if you want to connect to the internet with what is called mobile broadband, get a plug-in USB stick from a mobile provider and work with them; folks get those going well on linux these days;

gobi-loader seems to involve struggling with compiling kernels and stuff that doesn't seem to be for beginners ..............

- thanx for straight answer, I appreciate it.
- I might be linux newbie, but I am still IT professional, so I at least try anything what can help me
- I found a post on ubuntu forum (url in my first post) and tried the hints
- now I am trying to get some hint how to diagnose what did I do wrong - device does not get mapped to any tty*

so: how do I move forward? (getting another broadband device refused, as well as using fedora, which does not need to be patched to use qcserial)

Here is a hint how I resolved the issue:
1) download deb package http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 5_i386.deb from ubuntu kernel archive
2) install the image
3) reboot with newly installed image
4) install gobi loader - there is plenty of descriptions how to do this
5) reboot

ready to connect via Qualcomm :D
