nVidia G210 card and mint 64 bit - solved

Post by alun_sundry »

I was sure that I recently managed to get one version of the current nVidia driver for the G210 card, when I was using 32 bit mint 9. When I installed 195 yesterday the resolution was 800x600 and not 1024x768 and effects could not be enabled. I quite like the Gnome Compositing, but there is a bit of flicker with the default open source driver and I'm sure things could be better. I see there is also a 256 driver in the ubuntu archives, but that doesn't seem the one I need I think, even though my windows driver begins 256. I have meddled with xorg before but I'd thought the procedure had changed.

I did get one other driver straight of the nVidia site with a .run suffix, but didn't have much luck installing that, exiting X and all that, I'd rather use the normal method.

All advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I installed this ppa and then updated and now have this driver 256.44. I have GE Force GT 230M

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu lucid main

You should read this first

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

I had a number of issues previously including low graphics, not stopping, not booting but this driver seems to be fine for me.

For some reason the driver suggested in Hardware Drivers has installed now, correct resolution too, and Compiz is now working - except that the logo during startup doesn't show correctly but merely as text. I think this will have to do, unless anyone recognises what's happened here and can tell me.

Thanks, I hadn't noticed that 24 bit had been altered during installation of the driver to 8 bit and now all is well.
