building new computer...

Post by biocmp »

I want to build my first computer, I have someone who will be helping me put it all together (hopefully i won't need the help). I am wanting to put together a modest system that let's me run a few OS's. I have been running Mint on an old Dell.

The goal is to have a rig that is powerful enough to do photoshop/webpage development/ programming and maybe some movie editing. I don't need the latest hardware, just something powerful enough to last a few years with the above tasks, play movies and a few video games.

With that said, would anyone like to help me figure out what I need? :D

I don't intend for this to be a "give me everything" thread. I was just hoping to run across some people who enjoy doing this sort of thing. If that's not the case, I won't pester anyone.

Well, for a decent box, something like this might be sufficient:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6856119020
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819116076
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148235
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822148451
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827106333

You then swap out the current PC with this one. That saves you money by reusing the current peripherals you already have.

Of course, you can pick up a keyboard, mouse, and monitor if you want a completely new system.

I have built numerous machines with these similar specifications.
Current hardware: a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
Current OS: LMDE 3

What does everyone think of this?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103851 (processor) ($199)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813130274 (motherboard) ($199)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136319 (hard drives) ($75)
&
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136592 (hard drives) ($110)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231276 (ram) ($99)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827135204 (CD drive) (($23)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827136181 (BD) ($110)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6815116037 (TV tuner) ($110)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835103065 (Cooler) ($50)

The video card is a bit confusing for me:

This one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127490

Or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150351

Or if someone has a better suggestion for the video card.

Am I missing anything other than a case, monitor, keyboard & mouse?

Would any of you care to verify that all of those components work together and that there are no performance "bottlenecks"?

I am open to suggestions and I want this to last me as long as possible, while still getting the best deal for my dollar.

Well, disregard my suggestions above since it appears we are shopping in completely different price categories. You have more budgeted for your processor and motherboard than I have invested in my entire computer system, desk, and chair.

If I had any concern about components, the Blu-ray burner may or may not work in Linux due to codecs. Also, you may wish to research the TV tuner for compatibility. A hint for you is to Google the item and add Ubuntu to the search string. Have fun.

I won't be doing the blu-ray burner, I got a little carried away, it looked cool, but I don't have a true need for it.

Thanks for the heads up

I just installed the new AMD 6 core 1055T processor (<$200 US). The old one was a dual core X6000. Video transcoding time for a 2 hour movie went from just over 2 hours down to about 38 minutes. This on a machine with 4GB RAM and Mint 9 64 bit. Something to think about.
