Did you get anywhere with this Marcus as I have a similar question (except using Gnome / Mint 10).

I have two uses.

1) To transfer some old VHS videos onto DVD (PAL).

2) To be able to display and capture the video feed from a CCTV type camera (underground pipe checking and straight CCTV now and again).

I have found a list of supported devices:

"Here's the USB devices the 2.6.27 kernel has available:

Code:

USB Video Class (UVC)
USB GSPCA driver (NEW)
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR USB2 support (NEW)
Empia EM28xx USB video capture support (NEW)
USB video devices based on Nogatech NT1003/1004/1005 (NEW)
USB 3com HomeConnect (aka vicam) support (EXPERIMENTAL) (NEW)
USB IBM (Xirlink) C-it Camera support (NEW)
USB Konica Webcam support (NEW)
USB Logitech Quickcam Messenger (NEW)
USB ET61X[12]51 PC Camera Controller support (NEW)
OmniVision Camera Chip support (NEW)
USB W996[87]CF JPEG Dual Mode Camera support (NEW)
USB OV511 Camera support (NEW)
USB SE401 Camera support (NEW)
USB SN9C1xx PC Camera Controller support (NEW)
USB STV680 (Pencam) Camera support (NEW)
USB ZC0301[P] Image Processor and Control Chip support (NEW)
USB Philips Cameras (NEW)
USB ZR364XX Camera support (NEW)
USB Syntek DC1125 Camera support (NEW)
USB Sensoray 2255 video capture device (NEW)"

(I'm on 2.6.35-22 atm).

I think it's said that something with hardware video processing could help out both a slower PC and the OS but short of going through them all it's difficult to know which may have hardware support etc.

But I was really after some real world user experiences please?

Cheers, T i m
