mint 9 gnome & use of Wine to run Epson scanner.

Post by vineyardtechie »

Hi,
I tried to use terminal commands from suggestions on use of Epson Scanner & Mint 9.
Was unable to use scanner after trying commands & have sane installed & installed "iscan".

Have Wine installed.
Please suggest how I use Wine to run the scanner, as it does run under dual boot
with Win 7, 64 bit 4 GB of ram.
Sure I can use Win 7 to use scanner, but when do I rely on Mint solo with the scanner.
Yes, I'm so glad I kept Win 7 as dual boot.
Sure, I can buy a HP scanner that will run under Mint, but is Mint 9 ready yet, to "just work"?
thanks,
Jim

Epson Perfection 3170 Photo.

BTW: Epson scanners (all) are not auto recognized by Ubuntu re. drivers & software.
There's a great deal of "try this n that" in the search results.
With even "caution: this blah, blah may not work with the latest OS ver. 2.6, etc."

That's why maybe Wine will work.
Thanks,
Jim

Epson linux driver for Perfection 3170

Post by pdc_2 »

Hi Jim;

I don't think you need wine at all; it should work fine on linux;

Epson make printer drivers available for linux;

if you go here

http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/scan/DL2.do

it gives a link to download a driver for your scanner; I would understand that Epson go to some lengths to make drivers available for all their products; for those using linux;

They make an rpm package available; (which would be good for Fedora, OpenSuse etc) and as an alternative, a source file (tar.gz)

..... so that is not ideal for Mint, based on Ubuntu, that uses .deb packages but .............

From the link page I give you above, they make an excellent 39 page instruction manual available as a pdf file; I would suggest reading that first;

ideally, they would have a deb package for you; as they don't there would be at two ways to install the files they offer; (not sure how much linux you have done);

alien is a method of converting rpm to .deb to install in linux;

http://www.howtoforge.com/converting_rp ... with_alien here is a link explaining how to do this

if you choose the source file; for the .tar.gz the command is
tar -zxvf archive_name.tar.gz
you may need help on all that;

I hope some of this is helpful; let us know how it goes

to explain to you why richyrich may not have been able to help you immediately when you described the model of your epson scanner; folks on the forum do this voluntarily and sometimes our outside lives .. relations .. family .. interfere with forum support so it can be hard for those asking questions; when help is not immediately forthcoming; folks can only ask for your understanding on this

hi,
thanks, but the same difficulty.
I already went thru this before.

I hoped Wine would just work.

Anyway, no0 problem as I dual boot to Win 7.

I have recently converted from ubuntu11.4 to mint 11 and in doing so have lost use of my scanner. I have tried installing the .deb packages but keep getting an error message.

"Software index is broken
This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'"

Then when I use the update line in terminal I get

"E: Malformed line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read."

Paste here the output of your

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Or if the list have more lines, you can paste it to http://pastebin.com
