Are my Temps too Low?

Post by cottfcfan »

Using the Open source driver with a Radeon HD2400 card, my fan is permanently on, and the noise bugs me.
After installing the proprietary driver the noise is better, but the fan still cuts in a lot.
After installing LM Sensors and running the program my Temps are as follows:

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +8.0°C (crit = +95.0°C)

k8temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
Core0 Temp: +11.0°C
Core1 Temp: +19.0°C

This seems very low to me, is there any way to regulate the fan?

very low indeed
Either you have peltier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling) or the temperatures shown are wrong ... or it's freezing in your room

anyway: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=42737

Thanks for your reply kwevej,
As far as I'm aware i don't have peltier.
I've checked the thread you mentioned but its now 5 years old, so i don't really want to follow it.
Is there another program I can use to see if the displayed temps are correct?
I also have AMD cool & quiet function enabled in bios, should I turn it off?
And would the temps being that low damage my computer?

That thread has a recent post from 2009/10 at its last pages
But it's possible that you could find a newer fan control topic

I think that the temperature shown is wrong ... however, dunno how you can fix it .. maybe others will help.
If they would be real, they could not harm your system. Of course, there are some temperature bounds, but you are above them. .... jerks use liquid nitrogen cooling without breaking their system ;)

For Cool'nQuiet - leave it turned on, it should work under Linux.
powernowd could work (apt install powernowd)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Powernowd

This is also quite interesting, for Arch ...but it can help (with some modifications)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_speed_control

if it doesn't help, i'd recommend you some searching in the Ubuntu forums ..or maybe someone else here had a similar issue...

Thanks for your time kwevej.
I think your right. I think the displayed temps are incorrect.
I'll check out the links, but as long as no harm is being done then, fine.

I'd be tempted to enter the BIOS setup configuration at system startup (usually F2 or Del when booting) and go to the diagnostics page. The temps should be reported there. Leave it at that page a while and keep an eye on the temps, which should give you a clue if what's being reported by the OS is wildly inaccurate.
