USB modem won't authorize ISP

Post by okie2003 »

I am not sure where to post this: networking, software, newbie, or here. Could a moderator move if this is not the right place? Thanks.

I am running Mint 9 Gnome, kernel 2.6.35-02063507-generic (the original kernel did not work for me). I have a Rosewill RNX-56USB dialup modem with the conextant chipset. It works fine plugged into a Cradlepoint mobile broadband router, but it will not stay connected to my dialup ISP when directly connected to my laptop. From these forums and others it appears that the permissions might be the problem. So I have:
1)opened Control Center > Users & Groups > Advanced and checked User Privileges for Connect to Internet using a modem, send and receive faxes, use modems, and others.
2)I have verified that I am a member of groups dialout and dip
3)In Gnome-ppp I have set or verified: /dev/ttyACMO, tried both USB modem type and analog modem type which is what “detect” sets it to, triple checked phone number, login, and password.
4)Rebooted many times

The log from Gnome-ppp showing 1 ½ attempts (last half same as first & names changed to protect the innocent):
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ

The only advice I can readily provide is check your drivers if applicable. My knowledge of internet connections is limited to networking devices such as Ethernet and wifi. Some links, a bit dated but maybe useful, http://www.computing.net/answers/linux/ ... 22065.html

http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.ph ... 84&p=92267 <-------probably the most relevant

Sorry so many links. But like I said this is a little out of my field of knowledge. I hope some one comes along to set you straight. I will keep an eye out. Let me know what other questions you may have. lsmod will show you your drivers/modules.
