screen res - asus eee pc

i have installed linux mint on an asus eee pc 4G. i can no longer change the screen res to suite. it's set at 800 x 480 but i lose at the bottom on opening some windows and clicking makes the window jump up and down until severl clicks may eventually hit the target.
anyone found a fix? i am guessing the res needs to be 800 x 600. i do see and can access the task bar no problem though, it is just when i open some windows which means i can't see buttons along the bottom.
