Wireless on emachines m640

Post by grrrlshapedthing »

So While I would LOVE to just get rid of windows I can't for a few stupid applications that I need it for so I installed Linux Mint as a dualboot on my new laptop... I have been a long time fan of the mint and have been using it since 4.0, so I installed 10 and the wireless isn't working

I used lspci -nn to get my card info and this is what I got"

This wireless card is supported by the Broadcom-STA (wl) driver. This should be available through the Hardware Driver application.
> Menu > Administration > Hardware Driver
Highlight the Broadcom-STA and then click <Activate> in the window which opens. (You will need to be connected to the internet with a wired connection at the time you do this.)

It may turn out that you need a newer version of the driver than is available in Mint 10. I do not have it as an OS, so I do not know which version is available in it. The 5.60.48.36 version in Mint Debian is not new enough to support your card.
Source code for the newest version is available here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

Another driver which will support your card is the Broadcom brcm80221 driver. I do not know if it is in the Hardware Driver application.
brcm80211 is a free and open source mac80211 driver currently in development, supporting specific Broadcom 802.11n PCIe wireless LAN chipsets:

* BCM4313 (PCI-ID: 14E4:4727)
* BCM43224 (PCI-ID: 14E4:4353)
* BCM43225 (PCI-ID: 14E4:4357)

Extremely important as per dawgdoc:
You will need to be connected to the internet with a wired connection at the time you do this.
Not being connected to the Internet via a wired Ethernet cable during installation is the most common mistake made by new folks. Upon rebooting, a dialog box pops up asking if you want to download and enable the wireless drivers. It is pretty much automatic.
Current hardware: a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
Current OS: LMDE 3
