no sound - Realtek HDA card

Hi, I have just installed Mint 4 on my TOSHIBA A105 laptop with RealTek HDA soundcard. Problem is that I have no sound. I tried all the options under sound configuration with no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

I'm new to linux as well (have decided to debillygate!) and I also got the same problem as well, got a Zoostorm 4-5704, with a Realtek ALC883 HDA sound card. I am aware there is this solution using OSS: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3768914&postcount=60 but would like to know if theres a way to make it work with ALSA. If anyone has a clue, please do say, I use my laptop for recording audio and would prefer to have ALSA as base if possible.

Here's a line from the dmesg output I think is relevant:

[ 16.720000] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
[ 17.348000] lp: driver loaded but no devices found

And from lspci:

Same problem on gutsy with Dell D630. Supposed resolution currently is:

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

well, i've faffed about with ALSA but no luck. So I tried the OSSv4.0 solution I mentioned above. Still no sound, and the Mint Menu has stopped working now (GNOME cant load it anymore). More baffled than ever I must say. I really love Mint not having sound means I'm booting up in the evil WinXP more often than not, well against my conscience. If there's any enlightened linux gurus reading this, please help.

I too, have a toshiba laptop - I didn't have sound at install - do now - here's how...

make a file called snd-hda-intel

copy these two lines into the file:

#options snd-hda-intel position_fix=2
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

save - paste file in etc/modprobe.d

restart - sound will work
