Julia - no sound with Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio card

Hello,

I am very new in Linux. Long time Windows user, trying out Linux in new system.
System: Power Edge T410
Linux: Julia, KDE
I got this sound card from creative - Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio 70SB104000000 7.1

and it's not working.. no beginners luck
appreciate any help, is it a driver issue - how to solve; hardware incompatible? (I looked up and think this card is supported with Julia, not sure thought), anything else I need to do other than just installing the PCI card?

Can you elaborate some on "not working"? What have you tried? Are they speakers that plug directly into the sound card or into a USB port? Do heaphones work at all? Have you checked KMix to see if your speakers are enabled? Have you set speaker and master channels to max?

If you've done all the normal easy checks like those, can you provide the output of

so we can know which Intel HD chipset the card uses? Sometimes you have to edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to get sound working with some computers.

And please also provide brand and model of the computer. I saw a model, but it didn't seem familiar to me. When you edit alsa-base.conf you may need to cross reference the machine to a list from http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation ... Models.txt

TBABill:
-I am trying to listen to a .wav file using my head phone and no sound is coming through though the file is being played using vlc media player.
- my head phone is plugged directly in to the pci card
- I am not sure what KMix is, but the system has an icon at the bottom right corner which shows sound level at 80%. It has a mixer menu, I played with it a little but but no result.
- I have not played with the alsa-base conf file..but looking at some other forum, I am thinking this card is not supported at all in linux

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/463829 states that a user got it going (look at the last few listing) but only in Ubuntu 11.04, which is not released yet. It's beta right now, but is available for you to download and try if you want to use your sound card with a working distro right now. Mint 11 will be based on 11.04, but that will be a few weeks after 11.04 releases as final (I think).

I don't know if any backports were made to help with this problem in Ubuntu 10.10 and Mint 10 or not. Are you able to try Ubuntu 11.04? It may be that alsa is updated or the kernel updates have resolved the problem for your chipset. From 2009 through now it seems to have been an alsa issue that the alsa project was not working to correct, at least until a later version was released. But that later version is apparently not available in the repos so "maybe" you could download and install a newer alsa?

These are guesses and if you're not sure how, perhaps trying 11.04 till Mint 11 releases would benefit you by allowing you to use the card. The caveat to that is you'd be running beta software and not a final release, but Ubuntu is buggy even after release so you may not care I'd recommend running it live for a bit and test all your hardware before committing to an install. Otherwise you'll have Mint without sound unless you can disable the sound card and run off the sound on the motherboard, if available, and re-enable when Mint 11 releases.

Good luck. It's tough when something is just not supported well but there are some workaround options above.
