Speakers keep playing when headphones plugged

Hi, i use Mint 4.0 and when i plug my headphones jack the sound plays in the headphones and in the speakers at the same time.

I was having some issues with my realtek 268 before but solve them putting

model=acer on alsa-base

but now i got this problem

my laptop is a compal ifl90 barebone

Hi , are you sure that isn't a hardware problem ? I've got the same problem some time ago with my wife's pc and it was the female headphones plug in the sound card.

Sorry about this, but I'm a real newbie and finally found a Linux distro that I both like the look of and that works - except for the headphones.

I bought a brand new Acer4310 to experiment with and the headphone jack worked with almost all the other distros I tried.

I'd like to try 'putting model=acer on alsa-base' to see if it sorts the problem - but I have no idea how to access alsa-base.

Basic instructions please?

OK, I found a solution that worked.

1. Open a shell and type "asoundconf list" - This will give you the name of your sound card.
2. Type "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base" - This will bring up the alsa-base file for editing.
3. In the alsa-base file add the line "options snd-hda-<Name of your sound card from step 1> model=auto" with the rest of the options
4. Save the alsa-base file and restart your computer. The problem should be fixed.

Thanks for the info!! Unfortunately, I can't seem to make it work on my machine. I'm pretty new at this stuff so I don't know what went wrong.

I got a name from step 1 ("Intel") and I was able to open the alse-base file. Its the editing part I'm not sure of. This is what I added:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Anything missing? Is there an alternative method to do this?

When I reinstalled Mint on my laptop one of the many times, model=auto didn't work for me either. Instead try model=laptop and see if that works.

I tried this, but it didn't work for me. I wasn't able to get the speakers to mute with headphones in ubuntu, either.

I have the intel sound module too on a sony vgn-fz140e and this forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=637799 helped me alot. I also set options snd-hda-intel model=vaio.

Hello everyone,

I had the same problem with my laptop (3 years-old HP-Compaq NC6120 with an Intel ICH6), the solution I found is fairly simple:

Just double click on the Volume Control (the speaker at the bottom right of your screen) and go to the 'Switches' tab. There, make sure the Headphone Jack Sense is ticked. That did the trick for me...

'Fraid not. There was no''switches' tab. On the other hand I discovered that a right click would allow me to mute.

I have also tried both 'auto' and 'laptop' and this definitely doesn't work on my laptop. I have a compaq presario c751nr and it has an intel i965 chipset. If anyone else has some sort of insight or fix that's worked, I'd be most appreciative and willing to try it.

I currently have the same problem with a dell laptop.

Read the post from Little Girl somewhere near the end of the page. She gives 4 links, those are the interesting stuff.

Let us know if anybody solves the problem thanks to this...
