officejet 4500 works as printer but not as scanner

Post by moveright »

Sorry, I thought I posted this last night, must have been a dream, I cannot find the thread!

Anyhow, Mint found and played nicely with my officejet4500 immediately with no tinkering which was AWESOME!

However, I tried to use simple scan, and when I clicked the scan button, my printer said "scanning" but it really wasn't. Then, nothing would happen, it would just sit there like that. I'm sure this has something to do with the fact that it is not set up as a scanner.

I cannot find any scanner setup anywhere in mint. I see that mint comes default with hplip, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

Any suggestions?

Trouble is, HPLIP is already installed. it came pre-installed and the only other option is for the hplip-gui which does not apply to my gnome desktop. Additionally, unlike the user in the above thread, I don't get "scanner not found". I click "scan from feeder" and it shoes the circle pattern which I believe means it is sending the job out to the imaging device, then on my hp officejet, the screen says "scanning" but that's as far as any of it will go. I believe it will just sit there indefinitely.

Anyhow, is there an "add scanner" interface in Mint similar to the printer interface? Odd that Mint seemed to like my printer right out of the gate but it doesn't scan. I feel like there is something simple right in front of me which I am missing.

Yes.

The hplip link does not apply to me because it is part of instructions on installing hplip which is already installed on my machine.

the ubuntu link only had one link relevant to me which I followed which was the SANE printer lookup. it's listing under HP revealead only the following options:
ScanJet 5300C USB 0x03f0/0x0701 Complete 1 pass, 2400 dpi - some FW revisions have x-axis image scaling problems over 1200 dpi

There is no add scanner interface. The add printer also adds the scanner part of all-in-ones connected over network and USB scanners get automatically added.
