Please help me check my new desktop?

Post by cjellis6 »

So, I'm headed off to college in the fall, and I'm building a new tower to give myself a nice workstation. I've put together a list of hardware that I'll be getting, and from what I can tell everything I've picked works fine with Linux, but I wanted to post everything to see if anyone knew if there would be any issues. And of course, it's always nice to have someone check your work

Motherboard

Processor

Power Supply

Video Card

Wireless Card

Webcam

Monitors

I was planning on using a couple of spare Western Digital 500GB drives I had lying around, one for Katya and one for Windows (stupid university requirements :x ) unless there is a better configuration I should use instead?

I also wasn't sure if my video card was bulky enough. I'm going to be using two monitors, watching movies, and emulating some older game systems, but I won't be playing anything like Starcraft so I think I should be okay.

And for RAM, I couldn't decide between 2x4GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231422 or 4x2GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145261. I know the 2x4GB makes it easier to upgrade, but wouldn't the 4x2GB work better with the i5?

As for a case, if you'd care to weigh in, I'm deciding between two Antecs, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811129042 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811129057. I'm trying to build something mostly quiet, so I'm leaning towards the Sonata.

So if anyone has run into any trouble with these parts, or has tried them and loved them, I'd love to hear about it :D Thank you all for your help! The Mint boards are always so good to me.

That is entirely tooooooo much reading. But looks like you are going to have a beast of a system there. Some serious computing power going on. :D

Am not a nix compatible component guru or nix anything guru. Something tells me you've done your homework while putting all that together. Mainly just wanted to drool over the raw powa of those comp specs. Enjoy your new box and school.
