Occasional mouse problem

I've been using Mint as my main OS for about a month now, and overall its been excellent, apart from one annoying thing:
I have an optical USB Mouse connected, via an adaptor, to a PS2 socket, and occasionally (say 1 in 7 times) whenever I plug a USB stick or external HD into any free USB socket the mouse will completely freeze, the keyboard still works and the PC is OK, but the mouse does not funtion at all and the only way to get around this is to reboot (restarting X does not help).
Has anyone got any ideas?

I need you to confirm that you have the mouse in the PS2 connector. (There is only one for mouse by the way, so "a PS2" ? )

Yes, the mouse is in the PS2 connector. It is a USB mouse using a 'USB to PS2' adaptor.
