Hardware Detection and Monitor Resolutions

I have found that in Mint the package that contains the Resolutions for the Monitors only puts the Maximum resolution in the xorg.conf making it nearly impossible to change your resolution. What package do I need to get and from where to replace the one in Mint that has this problem?

How do I edit the GRUB?

There are two separate questions here that are unrelated.

1. is about the hardware database for monitors and their resolutions.
Now I know for a fact as it's been confirmed by others that there is a problem with the monitor database in the fact that it always displays the highest resolution possible. I'm using Nvidia Geforce 6100 and other Nvidia cards. Even in VMware-Server it happens. It won't let me display it in full screen mode because the hardware database sees the maximum resolution of my VMWare display and uses it and my real display can't even go that high. I can't adjust it down to a lower resolution.
I'm using the KDE and the new XFCE versions

2. is about how to edit the grub and what tool to use.

The "resolution thing" is not a problem in the main gnome version of Daryna
The Daryna KDE is actually forked off Kubuntu, so I don't know...
Will try to remember to reboot into Daryna KDE (it's on the same computer while Bianca KDE is on another)
I actually don't even have a single resolution in my xorg.conf (nvidia card)
As for editing grub
If you want to edit menu.lst

If you want to move grub to another distro you don't "edit"

Thanks. By the way the XFCE version does not have a display driver problem yet. I haven't installed any proprietary drivers yet but it seems to be working just fine as long as you use the tools in the settings menu. I've been working harder to make it Windows user friendly. I managed to open and edit kdesu kate /boot/grub/menu.lst but I can't figure out how to change the background image that shows up behind the menu. I did edit the list of boot up options like Clem wanted to Ultumix Linux bla bla bla instead of Linux Mint bla bla bla. Now I just need to change that picture.

One of the first lines in menu.lst is
gfxmenu=/etc/grub/message.mint
You have to make an own message.ultumix or you could use ordinary grub.

I don't understand what message.mint is. If it's a text file I will certainly open it. If it's suppose to be some sort of picture file what type is it? jpg, png, or what? You just create a picture and rename it to message.ultumix or something? Use ordinary grub? Isn't that what this is? All I want to do is just make the grub have Ultumix instead of Mint.

By the way I managed to edit the boot up splash but it's in 8 bit or something. I had to download another splash someone else had made in order to get the computer to accept it. Then I had to edit the image files and save them but for some reason it will only save in 8 bit. It looks strange. Anyway let me know if you have any advice there as well. On the bright side at least it does not say Mint so Clem can be happy now.
