Headphone jack is not working!

The headphone jack is not working on my laptop. The headphone jack only works on my WIndows 7 partition. I am using Linux Mint 12. My laptop is a Lenovo thinkpad R61 (2.1ghz dual core+1GB ram) from 2007. anyone know how to fix this?

dual boot W7u(64) and mint 11(64), on 2 seperate HDs in Acer Travelmate

What happened:
after updating my drivers on W7 with DriverEasy, I ended up with 2 "Sound Video Game controllers" devices, "High definition audio" and "Realtek High definition audio". No problem in W. However in Mint the earphones (only) where gone.
I tried the the solutions here and elsewhere on the forum, without luck.

Solution for me:
Since it all happened after the driver update I looked for a solution in W rather than L. I disabled the 1st of the above devices in W and lo and behold, the earphones in L where back.

Perhaps it might help someone else

Correction:
It was the Realtek driver that caused the problem. Had to roll back the Realtek driver in W7 to the 2 "High definition audio" again to get my earphones back permanently in L (Sorry about the mixup)

i also have this problem using Linux Mint Maya with the MATE 1.4 upgrade

my current workaround is to adjust menu -> preferences -> sound -> hardware tab, setting the 'profile' to 'off', and then resetting it to 'analog stereo output'. When i do return to 'analog stereo output', it has been muted, and turned way down. I unmute it, turn it back to 100%, and them im good for the rest of the session until reboot.

Note that this fix does not involve editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf whatsoever. Reposting the main body of bovorasr's solution in case the pricklytech link dies for whatever reason:

Having just installed Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) on my Dell Vostro 3750 I noticed that there was no sound when I plugged in my headphones.

The workaround was to edit /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-headphones.conf.

Since implementing this workaround I have found that updates have reverted the changes that I made to analog-output-headphones.conf. So I recommend making a backup of the original file, then making changes to analog-output-headphones.conf and then backing up the changed file.

Open the terminal and enter the following commands:
cd /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/
sudo cp analog-output-headphones.conf analog-output-headphones.bak
sudo nano analog-output-headphones.conf

Look for the section called [Element Speaker] and change it so that it looks like this:

[Element Speaker]
switch = on
volume = ignore

Create a backup of the corrected analog-output-headphones.conf:

sudo cp analog-output-headphones.conf analog-output-headphones.fixed
