Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Hi All,
I have a problem with my USB mass storage devices which I can't find a solution for on the forum(s). I will try to be as detailled as possible.
Problem description:
If I try to copy files to a USB storage device it just seems to stop copying (the progress indicator of Nautilus just stops and sits and waits forever). This happens with all USB sticks (thumbdrives) and on all USB ports (USB 2.0 and USB 3.0)
Actions taken:
Searched this forum and "ẗhe other one" (ubuntu) but did not find a solution
Changed grub settings to "pci=acpi" but no luck
Tried copying from the terminal. It did copy but after the first or second file it became as slow as molases.
Tried to copy from my virtualized Windows 7 (64 bit). Copying did not stop but the speed slowed down to an unbearable 2.5 MB/sec
Booted the Mint 12 Live CD but that showed the same problems
Booted Ubuntu 11.10 Live CD but that did not even booted properly
Tried to fill the drive from a network share with FileZilla. It stopped (or became extremely slow) after a file or two.
I am out of ideas of how to solve this.
Some system specs:
Mint 12 64 bit
MB: ASRock 880GMH/U3S3
Phenom II X4 965
16 GB DDR3 Memory
System drve is an SSD
There ar two internal HDD's connected to a SATA II interface
Any help truly appreciated!
Greetz,

Hi doktornotor,
Thank you for your interest in my issue. I executed the command you posted and it resulted in quite a lot of information (40 KB to be precise:))
So here it is:
I hope you can find anything indicating the problem.
Thanks again!

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
I am having the same issue. There is a long pause (~40-90 sec) at the end of each file copied.
I am running Isadora / Lucid Lynx 64 bit with current updates on a quad core 8GB system.
Copies eventually finish OK - its just annoying.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Hi wgking,
Nice to know I am not the only one
But it seems we are the only two in the world to be troubled by this. Or is the description of the problem not clear?
Come on, Guruus! Please help us humble noobs..

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Hey,
you're not alone! The same here: a lot of wasting time during any file copy.
Fresh Linux Mint 12 Lisa installation, IBM IntelliStation and USB-2 devices.
More than one hour to copy 1.2GB from the local HDD to the USB stick.
Here's the lsusb -v output:
Before with Fedora 15 I had no issues with USB speed, all devices were recognized correctly and on-fly,
included the printer's USB-multireader card. Now it is a pain.

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Hi Core Dumped,
Welcome to the club
Maybe I will try a completely different distro (Suse i.e.) with a live CD to see if that will do the trick.
But in the meantime I have some information to add to my first post. Who knows....maybe some Guru will stumble by and can use the information
Output of lsusb:
Output of dmesg|grep usb:
And the output from sudo lspci -v:
I hope someone can shed some light on this.
Greetz,

Welcome to the club
Maybe I will try a completely different distro (Suse i.e.) with a live CD to see if that will do the trick.
But in the meantime I have some information to add to my first post. Who knows....maybe some Guru will stumble by and can use the information

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Well, I have tried a Live CD from OpenSuse 12.1 (KDE). And lo and behold!! Copying just worked. OK, it was not at blazing speed (avg 10 MiB/sec) but still.....it did what it had to do. So no BIOS setting or hardware defect is causing this.
And on a side note, Dolphin looked great compared to Nautilus. Hmmmm, choices, choices..

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Same problem...taking days to copy a movie over to a usb drive that used to take minutes under win 7...
So the concensus is to reinstall another distro of linux?
So everyone has this problem?

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Hi soulrain,
No concensus as far as I am concerned. I would prefer to stay with Minty if I can.
It seems to be solved in the next Ubuntu release (12.04?) with kernel 3.2.0. At least that's what I read here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... omments/51
I am not enough of a Linux buff to know if it would be possible to use this kernel in my current Mint installation. Would be nice though

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Thanks for the reply... When is that next kernel due out?
Want to here my relatively ghetto work around?
I have a vm winxp64 running on one box, and use drop box so that windows can be used to put files to usb devices.
I should have left dual boot with windows on one of my boxes but I so just wanted to force myself to use linux.

Hi soulrain, soulrain wrote:When is that next kernel due out?
I expect the new kernel (3.2) to be out in April 2012. Most probably the end of April.
I Like your workaround but it does not work for me (Win 7 64bit in a VirtualBox 4.1.

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
I am not having any problem with copying files to a USB device, but from reading this I am wondering if perhaps it could be a permissions problem. What happens if you try to copy as sudo?
Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Hi Detonate,
Thanks for your interest in our problem.
Just tried to copy files as sudo using
It still takes about 1.5 to 2 minutes to start the copy of a file after the previous one has been comleted. Although it does look better (copying continues) it still takes ages to complete the command.

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Is there a difference if you don't use Nautilus?
Try using the copy command instead.

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
Hi Detonate,
I tried this: from within the folder of the files I want to copy. Note that sdi1 is the USB device I want to use. I get this response: So next I issued this command: It is still copying as I type. So it seems that there is no difference copying from Nautlius or from cli.
Note that I am using an AMD chipset (AMD SB710) with an additional chipset for USB 3.0 (ASMedia ASM1042). The problem is present on both chips.
Thanks again!
Greetz,
J@n
I tried this:
Code: Select all
sudo cp * /dev/sdi1
Code: Select all
cp: target `/dev/sdi1' is not a directory
Code: Select all
sudo cp * /media/KINGSTON

Re: Copy to USB devices slow and problematic
By trying from the command line with the same results, it is obvious that the problem does not lie with Nautilus. I have no further suggestions, hope this gets fixed by a system update.
