Laptop overheating

Postby gkrules on Sat Mar 17, 2012 7:51 pm

I have a Gateway NV53 (4gb RAM, 2.4ghz Dual Core) laptop running Linux Mint 12 with the 3.0.0-16 kernel. My laptop's CPU temperature(according to Jupiter) hovers close to 90 degrees Celsius when I am doing every day tasks, such as browsing the internet or listening to music with VLC. When I turn on power saving mode, it goes down to around 65 degrees, but almost everything is painfully slow. I am afraid that there will be permanent damage if I don't fix this soon.

If you don't have the proprietary video driver installed, you may want to try that. It that doesn't work or does not apply in your case, you may want to try a different kernel.

Re: Laptop overheating

I recently purchased an Asus Zenbook U31x (Ultrabook).

I installed Mint 12 kde last week. My main issue / concern is my cpu temperature which goes through the roof. Even when ldle, it sits at around 60 degrees c!

I am a linux newbie but I have exhausted my search engine to attempt to resolve this myself. Also , I have a dual boot (For some windows gaming). On windows the temp remains perfect even whilst playing a resource intensive game.

Possibly Mint (Or any other linux for that matter) have not tested with this new altra books hardware as of yet? Could some one please point me in the right direction as to how i can go about resolving this?

Regards

Francois Grogor :)

Has Mint got some form of CPU throttle control built it?

I never realised how much the software can affect temprature - always thought it was a hardware thing
I've fixed Windows, tried running with Jackalopes, fought Koalas & now, I'm addicted to Mints

@grogor: your zenbook will benefit from these workarounds

@gkrules: The Gateway NV53 needs the proprietary AMD Catalyst driver to cool down.

@ej64

Thanks for the help. I am struggling however.

Heres contents of etc/default/grub

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

To be honest, i dont really notice a difference in my temps.. its still hovering around 60c whilst idle...

Any ideas?

Just btw.. Im using that widget desktop (standard with mint 12).. Is that accurate? called hardware temperature

Just realizing that my ASUS 1215B temperature was 60 @idle and 75-85 on heavy load (on Celcius).

I also want to ask that question, how accurate is linux temperature sensor?
hope somebody can say that my hardware temperature just normal.. I just read on some page that normal temperature for laptop is 60-70 C

this is my inxi -F result

I did indeed do a sudo update-grub

The temperature seems slightly better. BUT I am suffering from random shutdowns im assuming due to excessive temps. As soon as i
put any reasonable load on my cpu it starts hitting 70-80 degrees.

Any ideas... BTW my command line defaults now look like below :
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1"

Ive also installed Jupiter and enable power saving mode.. Not much difference..

Any ideas?

I got a great command, it called sensors, it show our temp, including high limit and critical limit

Code: Select all
aragorn@aragorn-1215B:~$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:       +63.0°C  (crit = +95.0°C)

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1:       +63.4°C  (high = +70.0°C, crit = +92.0°C)

aragorn@aragorn-1215B:~$

so I think its easier for me to watch my laptop temperature...
