slow hdd <SOLVED>

Postby aitkiar on Sat Apr 07, 2012 1:46 pm

I've recently installed Linux Mint in an old box, with and IDE HDD and a DVD in the same IDE cable. When coping large files i noted that the HDD speed was slower than it should be. I've checkd with hdparm -i /dev/sda and get this results:

Code: Select all
 Model=ST3320620A, FwRev=3.AAE, SerialNo=9QF31EJ5
 Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
 RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=4
 BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=16384kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16
 CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=625142448
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
 PIO modes:  pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes:  mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5
 AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
 Drive conforms to: Unspecified:  ATA/ATAPI-1,2,3,4,5,6,7

 * signifies the current active mode

I noticed that the drive was not using the fastest UDMA mode so I tried to set it manually with:
Code: Select all
hdparm -d1 -X69 /dev/sda
but it returned the following error:
Code: Select all
/dev/sda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
 setting xfermode to 69 (UltraDMA mode5)
SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]:  70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 24 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
 HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

¿ Any ideas why i'm getting this ?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

In the end it seems that it was some kind of problem with the PATA cable. I've changed it for a new one and now the HDD uses the correct UDMA setting.
