Intel Video Card Drivers

Postby Deomedes on Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:34 pm

Hello everyone,
I posted in the noob forum, but i'm not getting much response, so i thought i'd ask uptop. I recently got a laptop custom built for me. I had them partition my harddrive and put linux on it. They ended up putting mint on it, which for the first few days seemed pretty cool. however, after i tried to use some of the special functions of the desktop, (as the "box" advertised) i ran into the brick wall that perhaps my driver was wrong. I proceeded to have my builder take a look at it and he loaded an experimental intel driver. I was not present when he did this, but apparently he used the forums here to find out which one to use. So far i have neither been able to run the cool advanced desktop effects, nor have i been able to see any of the cool screen savers that came with linux. I seem to be up a creek without a paddle. So first thing i want to ask, is where do i go to specifically find out what graphics card i have, and after that (i'm assuming its some sort of intel graphics card (which doesn't make much sense to me)) what driver i should use to be able to take full affect of the linux advanced desktop effects. Any information would be helpful. Thank you!

Welcome to Mint
Good choice by your supplier, but things could have gone better
Open a terminal and run lspci and post the output here (you right click in a terminal to copy)
This will tell us a lot about your hardware - everything connected to PCI to be precise
I doubt Intel as good Intel drivers are installed by default
And please give me some time to answer - I have long working hours today and tomorrow - we are all unpaid volunteers....

Ok - you'll be fine except for compiz
Unfortunately the intel 965 is on the compiz blacklist - all other Intel works fine with compiz
It is an integrated graphics so the performance will never be "super" but you will have 3D and the lot, but compiz - sorry no
This means that you should choose none or normal in the visual effects tab of Appearances in Control Center
This is something we can't control ....

hmm
Search in Synaptic (Package manager) for xorg intel and you will get a short list of drivers Select the one that works for 965

A LOT of searching (and some help with my friend) manage to find out how to get the chipset off the blacklist by doing a bit of work to do it. I managed to get it running fine on here. (though I can't use it for more than a couple days or my laptop locks up...)
