External drive won't open after crash/hang

Post by mikewstalbans »

I was doing an update with luckbackup and opening firefox at the same time. Firefox crashed/hung the system(which happens too often for my liking on LDE). Afterwards my ext.HDD wouldn't open , but is shown on 'MyComputer'. When I selected it I got this message:-

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/mike/IOMEGA_HDD5: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/mike/IOMEGA_HDD5"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

Not being very technical I have no idea what that means or how to fix it. Any help much appreciated.

Do you have a Windows installation or Windows computer so that you can do that?

I would suggest a different computer to do the chkdsk /f because of unknowns on the system that created the errors in the first place. Then address the the crash/hang problem so this does not reoccur.
