HDD Not showing up

The hard drive previously had windows 7 and windows xp on it and reformatted it
the hard drive shows up in windows 7 install but on linux mint 13 (or any linux distro) it dont show up on the install section or in gparted or anywhere else that i have read for tutorials on the problem i have had linux ubuntu on this pc in the past and it worked fine so i know it cant be the hard drive aint compatible
im also trying to install from a bootable usb if that makes a difference

A responce as soon as possible would be best seeing as how i no longer have an actual computer and using the installer for linux to talk lol
