SSD can't be mounted

Post by crsparks99 »

I'll have to apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge. I am very new to Linux so I don't know much at all.

So the problem is that when I go to Computer and click on my SSD (Samsung 850 Evo 250GB) it comes up with an error message that says, "Unable to mount location. Can't mount file." I have Mint 17.1 (64 bit version). I've seen other users showing the results for the command sudo fdisk -l so I guess I'll do the same.

sudo fdisk -l
[sudo] password for caleb:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders, total 488397168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

/dev/sdb1 2048 1465081855 732539904 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

I don't know if that will do you any good but there it is.

My hard drive is a 750GB Western Digital Elements external hard drive.

What do I do, preferably on the simple side of things, to make mint able mount my ssd?
Also, if there's any other information that you need please ask.

Welcome to Linux Mint Caleb.

The reason why you get the message that says "Unable to mount location ..." is because that drive is already mounted since you are using it.
If you want to examine what is on that drive then click on File System and then Home. Home is where all your personal files are.

Thank you.
So will everything under Home which is under file system be on the SSD? Nothing under home would be on the HDD?
Also will everything on the SSD be exclusively under home? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just wanting to get some clarity on how this all works.
Thanks again.

From the information that you have provided, your 250 GB drive is occupied by Linux and will contain your Home folder with all the personal files that you have created and will create in the future.

Your other drive, 750 GB, is formatted for a Windows installation and will contain items that you have created in Windows if that operating system is installed there. If it is a USB powered external drive then it will be mounted automatically in Linux Mint when you plug it into a USB port. Then it will be shown when you open "Computer" on your desktop. You can read what is installed there.

Please note that Windows will not be able to read what is on your Linux Mint installation.
