USB Flash drive not mounting

Post by Temporary Saint »

I have a Kingston 2GB flash drive that used to mount fine in Isadora 32-bit. Now it (or any other USB storage device) cannot be mounted if it's not connected to the PC at boot. Gparted does not show it as an available device, nor does fstab. lsusb displays it however:

Bus 005 Device 002: ID 046d:c016 Logitech, Inc. M-UV69a/HP M-UV96 Optical Wheel
Mouse
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 059b:0278 Iomega Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0951:1607 Kingston Technology DataTraveler 100 - THIS IS THE DEVICE IN QUESTION
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

dmesg displays:
[17002.164059] usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[17002.298992] usb 1-7: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Can I mount it manually without it having a device name (sda1, etc.)?

I haven't an answer i'm afraid but i have a similar problem.

I have a flash drive and a 'pen' drive - both with a AL_USB20 chip. Both fine on XP - so both are ok!

The flash drive works on linux but the pen drive is recognised (like yours but not mounted). One solution i thought was to install the app usbmount from the repo. BUt that doesn't seem to make any difference.

Neither does mounting manually on Mint xfce ver 9.

Elisa,

Well, installing pysdm must have forced something to work. I installed it, but before I ran it I inserted a USB flash drive into my laptop and the system mounted it automatically! Everything works fine now. :D I hope it stays that way. Thanks.

I'm afraid I have to resurrect this post. My system is not auto-mounting USB storage devices again. The situation is exactly the same as outlined in the first post: lsusb and dmesg both list the device as attached, but I cannot determine what the device name I would use to mount it manually (sda, sdb, etc.) Neither gparted nor pysdm list the device. Hw do I mount it???

Try to install "Disk utility" or quick mounting...

I installed palimpsest. Again, the device does not show up. This is crazy. It used to work fine. :(

What flavor of Mint are you using? Gnome, XFCE, KDE? And what release? 9, 10?

A little additional information - even though the device cannot mount, it is detected and mountable when I startup a virtual machine in Virtual Box, either Windows XP or another instance of Mint 9.

I am having this EXACT same problem running Julia gnome 32bit on an old laptop. Plug in a usb device of any kind and nothing happens, lsusb lists them but they aren't mounting or anything. Any help would be appreciated.

edit: ok don't worry, restarting after installing pysdm fixed it.
